Historical facts

The former sports team „Traktor Mestlin“(based on the financial support of the co-operative farm) was founded on 10th December 1949 by Heinz Pohl, Ernst Stegemann and Jochen Schmidt. Nobody could foresee the development of sports in our village at that time. But of course the dominant part was played  by „King Football“. There were adult and junior  teams. Later a motorsports group was founded and continued as a part of the „Society for Sports and Technology“. Some women  organized themselves in a gymnastics  group. The athletics group even sent some of their best sportsmen to the „German Gymnastics and Sport Meeting“ in Leipzig which was an important event in the mass sports of the G.D.R. Henny Barsuhn was responsible for the gymnastics group and Otto Polte trained the boxers . Even G.D.R. championships took place in Mestlin as well as international fights  of the  Schwerin Boxing  Club. Rolf Biermann has been the volleyball trainer for years. Sometimes there was a bowling group who built themselves a bowling alley with an automatic set up system in the former „Sportlerheim“. But after the changing this „club house“ went to ruin and was pulled down. And of course horse riding was an important sport in a village, too. It was supported by Harry Fagin, the manager of the co-operative farm.
The football team –trained by Hans-Peter Schneider- reached the „Bezirksklasse“ (the fourth league of the G.D.R.) in 1978. It was their greatest success.

In 1987 Mestlin was honoured with the title „Most sporting village of the former county Schwerin“ by the presidency of the German Gymnastics and Sports Comittee of the G.D.R. This award was given to Ulrich König (see the left article)
At that time there were nine sections with 323 members. A sensational event was the idea of a football match between the junior players and their mothers. The first match on December 14th 1986 was won by the children with the very “tight” result of 11:2. But wasn`t it a fantastic fun which will never be forgotten? It was the starting point  of
other strange and funny matches. Almost every newspaper and magazine, TV and radio were full of reports on this Mestlin idea. After the political changing  sports in Mestlin went back. Sometimes there was only one boy junior team. Since 1991 there have already been some girls`teams.

The three girls` teams with their coach Manfred  Ziebarth were very successful. So they won the championship and the cups of the county Mecklenburg-Vorpommern several times both as well indoors as outdoors. So they still belong to the very best teams in our federal state.

In 1999 a men`s team started to play in the district league.

Attached to the sport from childhood

Manfred Ziebarth has determined the sporting life in Mestlin for 41 years

Mestlin. Sports in the community Mestlin is always connected with the name Ziebarth. The brothers Dieter, Bernd and Manfred can`t live without sports. Sports and Manfred Ziebarth form a whole. While others are relaxing after work, Manfred trains his girls`teams. And instead of sleeping long on Sundays he and his teams have their matches in Mestlin or in the region.

“When we moved from Friedrichsruhe to Mestlin in 1960 I watched a football match at the age of 6. So I got fascinated by this sport”, the 46-year old told us. Even today he remembers the day when he got his first membership card at the age of 8. His first trainer was Erhard Koß who taught him a lot. He likes to remember his first matches in junior teams of the district league. They also played versus the junior team of the Red Army garrison in Parchim. He first succeeded at the age of 10. Then the “co-operation sports club Obere Warnow” was founded. In this team the best players from Mestlin, Kladrum and Zölkow were united. At last they were able to take part in the county championships. So the brothers Manfred, Dieter and Bernd often played in one team and in 1979 they finally reached their aim “Bezirksklasse”.
But Manfred himself didn`t only play. Very early he took responsibility and at the age of 14 he coached a team for the first time. For a while he then played for the team “Hydraulik Nord Parchim”, but soon returned to Mestlin and  to continue his "job” here. One of his best ideas was the ”mother-children match”. The media reported  detailed in 1986.
After 1990 things got worse, including sports. But Manfred Ziebarth initiated the foundation of the sports club Green-White in 1991. Today it is popular for girls´ football and for volleyball. Manfred  Ziebarth is the chairman of the club, the coach and he is also responsible for the girls`district league in the Western Mecklenburg  football association.
“When I was young others took care of me, today I take care of young people and so can give back something to the sports club”, so his admirable attitude. MGB
